When a child develops myopia, or nearsightedness, their distance vision becomes blurry and their prescription may continue to increase as they grow. Myopia management is designed to do more than correct blurry vision - it aims to slow the progression of nearsightedness over time.
At Whitefish Eye Center, we offer several myopia control options for children in the Flathead Valley, including MiSight 1 day contact lenses, Ortho-K lenses, and Essilor Stellest lenses. The right approach depends on your child's prescription, age, lifestyle, eye health, and comfort with contact lenses.
MiSight 1 day is a daily disposable soft contact lens specifically designed for myopia control in children. Your child wears the lenses during the day and throws them away each evening.
MiSight lenses provide clear vision while using specialized optical zones to help slow the progression of myopia. Because they are daily disposable lenses, there is no overnight wear, cleaning solution, or lens storage required. MiSight may be a good option for children who are comfortable handling contact lenses and want freedom from glasses during school, sports, and other daytime activities.
Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, takes a different approach. These specially designed rigid contact lenses are worn while your child sleeps. They gently reshape the front surface of the eye overnight so your child can see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
Ortho-K also helps manage myopia progression. It can be particularly appealing for active Flathead Valley kids who participate in sports, skiing, swimming, or other activities where daytime glasses or contact lenses may be inconvenient.
Both treatments can help manage childhood myopia, but the daily routine is different. When helping families compare their options, we consider factors such as:
• Whether your child prefers daytime or overnight contact lens wear
• Their age and ability to follow proper lens care instructions
• Prescription strength and changes in myopia over time
• Eye shape and overall eye health
• Sports, school, and extracurricular activities
• Parent and child comfort with the treatment routine
Neither option is automatically right for every child. A comprehensive eye examination and myopia evaluation allow us to recommend an approach based on your child's individual needs.
Contact lenses are not the only option for myopia management. We also offer Essilor Stellest lenses for children who prefer eyeglasses. Stellest lenses look and function like regular eyeglass lenses while incorporating specialized lens technology designed to slow myopia progression. They can be a convenient choice for younger children, children who are not ready for contacts, or families who prefer glasses as part of their child's myopia management plan.
Myopia can change as children grow, which is why ongoing monitoring is an important part of treatment. We evaluate your child's vision and eye health, discuss how quickly their prescription is changing, and help determine whether MiSight, Ortho-K, Stellest lenses, or another management strategy fits their needs.
